Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed that he was behind many of the Fourteenth Doctor speculation rumours doing the rounds online.
The news comes after Ncuti Gatwa has been revealed as the next actor to portray the Time Lord, however the rumours floating around prior to this announcement were always suggesting an alternative future for the show.
"None of you even guessed," Russell says happily to Radio Times. "He's so brilliant and so popular, he wasn't even guessed, so I'm feeling a little bit victorious here!
"There's been a few false stories and false tales and we placed a few posts ourselves," he admits. "A couple of misleading things, and we're very pleased that that kind of worked."

It's unclear exactly which rumours were shared by Russell, however thinking back to before Ncuti Gatwa was announced, rumours were strongly in favour of David Tennant coming back with a potential return for Catherine Tate alongside. Olly Alexander was also mentioned frequently, star of It's A Sin, written by Russell T Davies and singer in Years and Years. Other rumours speculated Jo Martin, who played the Fugitive Doctor previously in Doctor Who might make a comeback full-time.
Most recently, James Corden came into the conversation amongst fans, as he has recently announced his departure from his US talk show The Late Late Show. He also previously stared in two episodes of Doctor Who during the Matt Smith era. Russell, however, has clarified that he didn't share that particular rumour himself. "We didn't plant that one," Russell admits. "So that caught me frankly."

Russell T Davies will start his new era of Doctor Who in 2023 with Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor. They will follow the departure of current showrunner Chris Chibnall and current Doctor Jodie Whittaker, who both depart the series in the Doctor Who Centenary Special in Autumn 2022.
