Doctor Who is looking set to have its budget tripled in size with new potential spin-off series planned under the new deal with Disney+.
According to an article from Broadcast, industry executives speculate the next series of Doctor Who could have a budget in the region of £100m.
This increase would see individual episode costs go from £1m - £3m to around £10m, thanks to the new deal between the BBC and Disney Branded Television under returning showrunner Russell T Davies.
Broadcast reports of an individual with inside knowledge of the new deal, who strongly believes this is an “incredibly exciting” time for the franchise as one of the main goals is to reach wider audiences across the US as well as produce new spin-off programmes to run alongside the main show.
“Beyond the hardcore fans, Doctor Who has never quite became a broad appeal show [in the US]” they've reportedly said. “But with the right investment on Disney+, Russell has a bigger blank piece of paper to really do something different.”
So new spin-offs could be hitting our screens very soon, which have previously proven to be a success with shows including Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
“My sense is that this is an investment to fully exploit the franchise and bolster the BBC coffers,” the insider adds.
Doctor Who will return in November 2023 with special episodes to coincide with the show's 60th Anniversary. David Tennant is returning as the Fourteenth Doctor and will later hand over the TARDIS keys to Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.
